Why school districts and bus contractors are adding parking AC
Most US school districts and state DOTs enforce 3–5 minute no-idle limits on school property to protect student air quality. Bus drivers can wait 30–60 minutes between routes or during sports/field-trip standby with no legal way to keep the cab cool. Battery-powered parking AC solves the compliance problem and improves driver retention — a major issue across the school bus contractor industry where driver shortages limit route coverage.Voltage and model recommendations
Most North American school buses (Blue Bird, Thomas, IC) use 12V electrical with optional 24V battery banks on diesel chassis. ZH 1000 12V is the standard for Type A and Type B buses; VS02 PRO 24V for Type C and Type D diesel chassis. The VS02 PRO / ZH 1000 / VC 1000 / VC 2000 range covers all four bus types and is sized to cool the driver compartment specifically (not the full passenger cabin).Installation on school bus roofs
Roof cutout 360×360 mm fits cleanly on most Blue Bird Vision, Thomas Saf-T-Liner C2, IC Bus CE Series and other US/Canadian school bus rooftops. Installation 3–4 hours by a refrigeration tech. We supply mounting plates for non-flat bus roof curvatures and weatherproof gaskets rated for 200,000-mile bus operating life.Battery and operating profile for school bus duty
School bus duty cycle is favorable: 2–4 hours of parking AC use per day (route gaps + layover), then full alternator recharge during route operation. A 100Ah AGM auxiliary battery handles a 3-hour layover. Lithium not typically required for school bus duty given short discharge windows and frequent recharge.Fleet pricing for districts and contractors

Is parking AC compliant with school district no-idle rules?
Yes — that's exactly the use case. Battery-powered cooling keeps the cab comfortable without engine idle, which is what no-idle policies require.
Will it drain the bus battery during a 60-minute layover?
A 100Ah AGM auxiliary battery (separate from the starter) provides 3+ hours of cooling without affecting starter capacity. The starter battery is fully protected by an isolator.
Does it cool the whole bus or just the driver?
Driver compartment only. Cooling the full passenger cabin without engine running would require 3–4x the BTU capacity and a much larger auxiliary battery bank. For passenger cabin cooling during transport, the main bus HVAC runs from the engine as normal.
Is it noisy enough to disturb students during loading?
No. Operating noise is approximately 52 dB at 1 meter — quieter than typical conversation and significantly quieter than a school bus engine at idle.
