Cold-climate trucking has unique cab-heating requirements: extreme low temperatures down to -40°C, frequent overnight rest in remote areas without shore power, anti-idling regulations in many Canadian provinces and EU states, and engine pre-heat needs in -25°C+ conditions. Operating envelope — -40°C capability

Vethy / Webasto 5 kW diesel heaters operate to -40°C ambient. Cab pull-up from -30°C to +18°C in 25–35 minutes. Compatible with winter-grade diesel and biodiesel blends up to B20.

Anti-idling regulations in cold climates

Canada, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany and many US northern states cap engine idling at 3–5 min even in cold conditions. Driver comfort heaters are exempt from these caps and are the legal solution.

Engine pre-heat — coolant heater option

Coolant-loop heaters (Webasto Thermo Top, Vethy equivalent) circulate warmed coolant through the engine block, easing cold-start, reducing engine wear and improving fuel economy by 8–12% on the first hour of driving.

Fuel-line and tank considerations

Diesel waxing at -20°C+ requires winter-grade diesel or kerosene-blend. Insulated fuel line from tank to heater prevents waxing in the heater itself.

Bunk-level vs cab-level air supply

5 kW heaters produce 200 m³/h warm air. Mount the supply louvre at bunk level for night rest, switch to cab level for daytime driving. Some fleets use dual-louvre kits.

Yes — glow-plug startup is rated for -40°C cold-soak conditions.

Does the heater work with winter-grade biodiesel?

B20 and lower OK. Higher biodiesel concentrations may cause gel issues in extreme cold.

How much diesel does the heater burn per night?

1.5–2.8 L for a 10-hour overnight at -20°C ambient using a 5 kW heater on modulated output.

Is the coolant pre-heat option separate?

Yes — coolant pre-heaters (Thermo Top class) are a separate product from cab air heaters. Both can be combined.
