Parking AC Low Refrigerant — Symptoms & Leak Test

How to recognise low-refrigerant symptoms on parking AC, perform a basic leak test, and decide between top-up vs full system service.

Parking AC Low Refrigerant — Symptoms & Leak Test
Low refrigerant charge is one of the most common warranty claims after 3–5 years of parking AC service. Recognising the symptoms early prevents compressor damage from oil-circulation loss. This guide covers symptoms, leak-test procedure, and when top-up alone is safe vs when full service is required.

Symptom 1 — Reduced cooling capacity

Air-side ΔT drops from 12°C to 6–8°C over a period of weeks. Cab pull-down time doubles. Often the first noticed symptom.

Symptom 2 — Ice formation on the evaporator coil

Low refrigerant causes the evaporator pressure to drop below freezing point, icing the coil. Symptom: water dripping in the cab when ice melts after shutoff. See water-leak page.

Symptom 3 — Frost on the suction line

Visible frost on the larger refrigerant line near the compressor indicates the system is starved and the throttling point has migrated.

Symptom 4 — P2 low-pressure fault code

When refrigerant drops below ~10% of charge, the LP switch opens and triggers P2. Compressor stops and the unit blows ambient-temperature air.

Symptom 5 — Oil residue at fittings

Refrigerant carries refrigerant oil. Any joint, schrader valve or service port with greasy residue is a confirmed leak point. Soap-bubble test confirms gas escape.

Leak test procedure

1) Recover remaining charge. 2) Pressure-test with dry nitrogen to 1.5 MPa and hold for 15 min. 3) If pressure drops, use electronic leak detector or UV dye. 4) Repair leak. 5) Evacuate to 500 microns. 6) Recharge to nameplate weight.

When top-up alone is safe vs full service

Top-up alone is acceptable only if charge loss is <15% and no leak is found after dye test. Otherwise full leak repair + recharge. Email service@vethy.com or call +86-532-87729918 for service manuals, spare-parts catalogues and warranty support within 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Can I top up parking AC refrigerant with a DIY can?

No. DIY top-up risks overcharge, contamination and personal injury. Use a certified MAC technician with proper gauges and scales.

What refrigerant does Vethy parking AC use?

Most models use R134a; newer 2026+ EU-spec units use R1234yf for F-gas compliance. Check the nameplate.

How long does refrigerant last in a sealed parking AC?

5–8 years with proper installation and no mechanical damage. Annual loss <3% is normal.

Will low refrigerant damage the compressor?

Yes — refrigerant carries the lubricant oil. Running on low charge for extended periods starves the compressor of oil and causes bearing wear.

Does Vethy warranty cover refrigerant leaks?

Within 12 months, yes — assuming no installation damage. After 12 months, parts only on confirmed manufacturing defect.

How much does a full leak repair + recharge cost?

USD 200–400 at a typical refrigeration shop. Email service@vethy.com or call +86-532-87729918 for service manuals, spare-parts catalogues and warranty support within 24 hours.
