Parking AC Battery Drain: Causes and Fixes
Why a parking air conditioner drains the sleeper batteries faster than expected — and how to fix it.

A correctly sized 12V parking AC should give 8 to 10 hours of overnight cooling on a 4×100 Ah AGM sleeper bank. If your unit cuts out after 4 to 5 hours, the AC is not the problem — the battery bank, alternator profile or low-voltage cutoff is. This page is the diagnostic flow.
This page is a generic field troubleshooting guide for Vethy 12V/24V parking air conditioners. Always disconnect the battery before opening the unit and follow the install manual that shipped with your specific model. Refrigerant work (R410A) must be performed by a certified technician.
1. Confirm battery bank capacity is correct for your AC
| Model | Night-mode draw | Recommended bank | Typical runtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| VS02-PRO 12V | ~18 A | 4×100 Ah AGM | 8–10 h |
| ZH800 12V (inverter) | ~12–15 A | 4×100 Ah AGM | 10–12 h |
| VS02-PRO 24V | ~9 A | 2×100 Ah AGM 24V | 8–10 h |
| VM6000 Max 12V | ~28 A | 6×100 Ah AGM or 200 Ah Li | 7–9 h |
2. Check AGM age — biggest hidden cause
AGM capacity drops 30 to 50 % after 3 to 4 years of deep cycling. A 4×100 Ah sleeper bank that tested fine in year 2 may only deliver 200 Ah useful by year 5. Load-test each battery, replace any below 80 % rated capacity.
3. Verify low-voltage cutoff setting
Vethy ships with 11.4 V cutoff (12V) and 22.8 V cutoff (24V). If a previous owner disabled or changed this, the unit may shut off prematurely — or worse, drain batteries to crank-killing depth.
4. Check alternator and isolator charge profile
The sleeper bank should reach >90 % SOC within 2 hours of highway driving. If the alternator isolator (Sterling, Battery Doctor, factory BCM) is undercharging, the bank starts the night low. Use a clamp-meter or smart shunt to confirm.
5. Upgrade options for short-runtime fleets
- Swap AGM for 200 Ah LiFePO4 (real 200 Ah usable vs 50 % usable AGM).
- Add 200–400 W roof solar to offset 30 to 50 A·h per sunny day.
- Switch to ZH800 inverter — 20–30 % lower average draw.
- VS02-PRO rooftop parking AC – 12V/24V flagship.
- VX3000SP split parking AC – 12V/24V split.
- VM6000 Max – oversized cabs.
- ZH800 inverter rooftop – low current draw.

Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for the parking AC to run my batteries down to 11.5 V overnight?
Yes if the bank is correctly sized and the cutoff is set at 11.4 V. Below 11.0 V you risk cranking — upgrade the bank.
Do I need LiFePO4 or is AGM enough?
AGM works fine if the bank is correctly sized and replaced every 4–5 years. LiFePO4 gives 2× usable capacity per Ah but costs 3–4× upfront.
Will solar fully run the AC overnight?
Solar offsets daytime recharge, not overnight load. You still need a battery bank sized for the full overnight cycle.
Can the parking AC be wired direct to chassis battery?
Not recommended. Always wire to a dedicated sleeper bank via isolator to protect cranking capacity.
