12V Truck AC Wiring: Harness, Fuse and Battery Connection

A 12V Vethy parking AC draws up to 35 A on startup and 18 A in night-mode cooling. This guide covers the correct cable gauge, fuse rating, ground bond and isolator setup for a safe and clean install.

This page is a generic field troubleshooting guide for Vethy 12V/24V parking air conditioners. Always disconnect the battery before opening the unit and follow the install manual that shipped with your specific model. Refrigerant work (R410A) must be performed by a certified technician.

Cable, fuse and connector spec

  • Cable: 6 AWG (16 mm²) tinned copper, both positive and negative, for runs up to 4 m.
  • Fuse: 40 A blade fuse on positive, within 30 cm of the battery terminal.
  • Connector: M8 ring terminal at battery, Anderson SB50 or screw terminal at unit.
  • Ground: dedicated chassis ground point, clean to bare metal, anti-corrosion coat after install.

Wire to a dedicated sleeper bank — not the cranking battery

Do not wire the parking AC direct to the cranking batteries. Use a dedicated 4×100 Ah AGM (or 200 Ah lithium) sleeper bank isolated from the cranking circuit via a Battery Doctor / Sterling / factory smart isolator. The isolator charges the sleeper bank when the engine runs and disconnects at engine-off to protect cranking capacity.

Low-voltage cutoff

The Vethy parking AC includes a built-in 11.4 V low-voltage cutoff that shuts the unit off before the sleeper bank reaches crank-killing depth. Do not disable this in field settings.

Connection sequence

  1. Disconnect both cranking and sleeper batteries.
  2. Run 6 AWG positive from sleeper bank + terminal through 40 A fuse to unit + input.
  3. Run 6 AWG negative from unit – input to chassis ground point (or back to sleeper bank – terminal).
  4. Reconnect sleeper bank, then cranking. Power on unit and verify display.

If the problem persists after the steps above, contact Vethy support with the unit serial number, install year and a short video of the symptom: info@vethy.com · Open a support ticket.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use 8 AWG cable?

Only for runs under 2 m. Most installs need 6 AWG to keep voltage drop below 3 % at full load.

Do I need a separate sleeper bank?

Strongly recommended. Wiring direct to the cranking battery risks crank failure overnight.

What size isolator?

Match the alternator output — 100 A isolator for a typical Class 8 single alternator setup. Dual alternator builds may use 200 A.

Can the parking AC run while the engine is running?

Yes. It will draw from the sleeper bank, which the alternator simultaneously charges via the isolator.
